Emme's blog

This may be old news to most of you but the Prêt-a-porter shows for Fall 2007 walked down the runways early this month. From Alexander McQueen's "witchy" women to Balenciaga by Ghesquière's school boy goes global looks, it was a very different scene than in New York's Bryant Park. Fortunately for shoe lovers everywhere, the shoes were oh-so-much more interesting as well. read more...

If Only Every Man Was Like This...

Recently I came across the greatest fashion blog I've seen. Written by a man whose wife loves shoes as much as we all do here at ShoeIQ, this blogger spares no details in recounting his wife's recent shoe purchases.

Unfortunately, the last entry was sometime in 2004, so it appears that like so many good things, this blog too has come to an end. Take a look anyway and dream of the day when all men are so interested in shoe fashion!

It's that time of year again. The fashion press is still huddling in the cold tents of Manhattan for the end of Fashion Week, but Shoe IQ is bringing full coverage of shoes for Fall 2007-- the good, the bad and the ugly. And with a fall full of drab, tailored looks on the forecast, shoes will be an even more important fashion statement this coming season. read more...

Recently I purchased a wonderful pair of black low-heeled pumps by Marc Jacobs--a birthday gift to myself and a partial fulfillment of my New Year's Resolution to add more significant shoes to my closet. I thought today's blog about these beauties provides me with an excellent opportunity to elucidate my whole shoe choosing process.

Like someone who enjoys fine wine or art, I have become a connoisseur--of shoes. This isn't hard to do, anyone who has the time can do it. It's simply a matter of opening your eyes and seeing a lot of shoes. That is really the first step and if you are reading the blogs found here on Shoe IQ then you are already well on your way to becoming a connoisseur. read more...

The Well-Heeled Shoe

'High heels were invented by a woman who had been kissed on the forehead.' - Christopher Morley

I, too, have a shoe calendar this year. And the above was the quote for  January 13-14. It struck me as odd for a couple of reasons.

We've talked about the history of the platform sandal in this blog before (remember chopines?). And we've looked at the red heeled men of Louis XIV's court. What struck me as particularly vexing about this quote is that 'high heels' as we think of them today were really first worn by men. And what's more, whoever invented them was much more likely to have been a man. Shoe making, like almost all of the occupations related to dress-including corset making-was a strictly regulated and guild profession exclusive of women. read more...

2007 "Shoe" Year Resolutions

in

As the end of 2006 quickly approaches, I am reminded of the old proverb "Now for good luck, cast an old shoe after me..." (if this doesn't sound familiar, think of every Hollywood ending where the newlyweds drive off with cans tied to their car bumper--this tradition began with old shoes instead).

I have long felt that quality is better than quantity and in an effort to embrace this belief in the new year, I have decided to thoroughly cleanse my shoe closet of all those shoes which were cute but not quite cute enough. What am I left with, you might ask?

Take a look...The remains of my shoe closet... read more...

Shoes That Fit

"At Shoes That Fit, we provide new shoes and/or clothes to children in need so that they can attend school in comfort and with dignity. We do this by matching a sponsoring group—a business, school, church, civic organization or even a group of friends—with schools near them that have children in need." read more...

Riddle: How is a Stiletto like a sky scraper?

How is a stiletto like a skyscraper?

When you put it in terms like these, its easy to see the obvious relationship between shoe design and architecture.

The more subtle similarities might escape your notice however, so perhaps its better to think of it in this way... read more...

From two weeks ago--"Regarding exhibiting shoes as a work of art:  Why should the space be occupied by this material?  What would justify our time spent viewing these objects?  Was it purely an aesthetic experience?   read more...
