2007 "Shoe" Year Resolutions

As the end of 2006 quickly approaches, I am reminded of the old proverb "Now for good luck, cast an old shoe after me..." (if this doesn't sound familiar, think of every Hollywood ending where the newlyweds drive off with cans tied to their car bumper--this tradition began with old shoes instead).

I have long felt that quality is better than quantity and in an effort to embrace this belief in the new year, I have decided to thoroughly cleanse my shoe closet of all those shoes which were cute but not quite cute enough. What am I left with, you might ask?

Take a look...The remains of my shoe closet...

Not much to look at I know but let me break it down for you. From the top, a pair of London Sole flats in purple leather. Then my prized shoe possession--a pair of Maison Martin Margiela split toe ballet flats in black next to an old favorite, my Doc Martens in a spectactor style. Directly below those, a pair of Moschino Cheap & Chic sandals that I acquired this past season. To the left of these, another pair I prize - my Jil Sander boot/sandal hybrid from several seasons ago. Such a great design I can't bear to let them go. Finally, one of the first pairs of Charles Jourdan's I bought when I came to LA, a pair of strap back square toe pumps in lime green with black details. These are next to the Kate Spade "Lover" sandals in black.

All the space in my closet leads me to my second resolution--investing in some key designs for the next season. Here are a few on my list--

My shopping list for 2007

I have been wanting to add a couple of important designers to my closet inventory, among them Blahnik and Louboutin. And since I donated my vintage Red or Dead knee high boots to charity a couple of years ago, I've been looking for a suitable replacement. Some thoughts--an ankle boot from Zac Posen or this very stylish (and comfortable) boot by Taryn Rose.

Now that I've gotten that out of my system, I will return next week, ready for another year of examining the cultural and artistic sides of shoe design.

Happy 2007!
